DESCRIPTION

The 26,000 sf Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center, just east of Cassell Coliseum, is a state-of-the-art practice facility for men and women’s basketball. It includes memorabilia areas, coaches’ and staff offices, two basketball courts, locker rooms, film classrooms, and other amenities that enhance the university’s basketball programs.

CHALLENGE

Column loads were up to 430 kips and wall loads ranged from 2.5 to 4 klf. Soil conditions consisted of 1 to 19.5 ft of very soft to very stiff clay fill underlain by stiff to very stiff clay and elastic silt residual soils underlain by weathered rock.

SOLUTION

The geotechnical engineer recommended the Geopier® system as the foundation support for this project to limit total and differential settlement. Over 350 Geopier® elements were installed to depths that ranged from 8 to 16 ft below the bottom of footing.
